Saturnalia.
PENNY: Hey, Sheldon, Leonard and you do the Christmas tree?
SHELDON: No, why not celebrate the ancient pagan festival of Saturnalia.
PENNY: Saturnalia?
SHELDON: pre-Christian era, while the winter solstice approached and the plants died, the pagans wore sprigs of evergreens into their homes as a benevolent spell, intended to protect the lifeblood of the plants until spring.
This custom was later endorsed by the peoples of Northern Europe, and eventually became the so-called "Christmas tree".

PENNY: I do not know ... because it's Christmas?
SHELDON: Oh, Penny! So you think you are generous, but the foundation of the exchange of gifts and reciprocity. Do not you have given me a gift, you gave me a commitment!
PENNY: Hey, it's okay, do not give me anything in return.
SHELDON: Of course I have! E 'at the base of the custom which I now must go out and buy a present value that represents the same proportion and perceived level represented by the gift of friendship that you gave me.

PENNY: I love decorating the Christmas tree ... It makes me feel a child again.
LEONARD: When I was little, our house did not the tree.
PENNY: Really? And why not?
LEONARD: In my family as you celebrate the holidays were studied for their psychological and anthropological implications on human society.
PENNY: It sounds cheerful. At least you exchange gifts?
LEONARD: In a way ... It presents essays written by us. Then we divided into discussion groups and criticized each other's work.

PENNY: What?
SHELDON: You're kidding, right? It 'a bust of Sir Isaac Newton!
PENNY: Oh, sure, right. Great Christmas!
SHELDON: Hey, sorry lot, but Christmas is more of everything you've put on the tree.
December 25, 1642 of the Julian Calendar, Sir Isaac Newton was born. Jesus, however, actually originated in the summer. On the day of his birth was moved to coincide with the traditional pagan celebration in which celebrated the winter solstice, lighting fires and cutting the throat of kids. Which, actually, it seems much more fun than 12 hours to church with my mother, followed by a simple cake with dried fruit.

S03E11 The Big Bang Theory - The maternal congruence
Guys, this year Christmas has been for me another day ... even one of the best, actually.
who follows me from the beginning will recall that some years it is. In this period - and, in particular, Dec. 25 - builds a strong negative for me! I can not spend Christmas decent, short, and now I fear the date as a Friday 17. :-P Not being particularly
sided with the Christians, nor with the Catholics, I suppose that would be pretty hypocritical for me to celebrate Christmas with something more than the traditional tree and the crib that my mother continues to do each year tradition . Let's say I do not understand so much the holidays and it seems a bit 'like the Valentine's Day an excuse to sell crap and give a sort of cleared his conscience.
Christmas, as I see it, is a bit 'as a condiment ... Who cares about the family for 364 days a year can pretend that they care more for the lunch on 25 and think be in place as well. They gather around the table all the relatives and even those who pretend to hate each other wish well for a few hours. It 's a "traditional pantomime, well ... And I do not understand it completely. At the end of the day, almost everyone comes to hate Christmas because people spent three days out in the cold to buy dozens of gifts, because those who spent three days cooking and cleaning house, because those who had other commitments but had to follow the tradition and was forced to join the party, who feels guilty for having eaten too much and he knows that will have to struggle to dispose of, etc ...
E 'requirement that I do not understand ... By now everyone knows that December 25th is an ancient pagan festival, not the real "birthday" of Jesus Christ, so also the religious motivation is not. It celebrates the "Family", but many are unwilling, to cleanse the conscience or "obligation." So what's the point? For this reason I say that Christmas is a bit 'as Valentine's Day is a day that is celebrated as an obligation - and no other logical reason - a value (family / love) that really should be celebrated with the same spirit of each other 364 days!
Again, everything is reversed in this world that turns the wrong way: we should be Christmas every day of the year except one, if ever. Not just the memories of his family, needy and the warmth of only once a year in a random day! It 'stupid. Christmas can be an opportunity to come together and celebrate those values, but on the evening of 25 you should come to hate the holidays. Otherwise it means that something went wrong. Better to have your Christmas December 27 and really celebrate, rather than doing anything to celebrate the 25th and come to hate him.
Moreover, if what really matters is family and love, then Christmas is just when we are all people we care ... which is December 25, January 4 or Aug. 7.
This year I tried but I could not ... I can not "hear" Christmas as I used to ... But I'll try again next year! Promised! :-)
